709 (St. John's NFLD)

"ABOUT THE 709 DERBY GIRLS (FEBRUARY 1, 2013)
The 709 Derby Girls is Newfoundland and Labrador’s first roller derby league. While the players are all female, the referees, volunteers, and committee members are co-ed. The 709 Derby Girls is a not-for-profit organization that offers a new and exciting sport to the St. John’s area. We strive to promote active and healthy lifestyles. The league was established by two home-grown gals (Cemeterri Jane and Myk Tytan) who had an itch that needed to be scratched. Nothing that was already up and running could do the trick. They were looking for something that had just the right combination of athleticism and attitude. These go-getters decided they would call out to the other ladies of St. John’s and hope for a response. Quite a response was received! In December 2009 the league was established. With some additional hard behind the scenes work, and a great deal organization, January 13, 2010 was the first official practice for the 709 Derby Girls!"  - From the About page at http://709derbygirls.com/
